Microsoft has confirmed that Windows Server 2016 reaches the end of extended support on 12 January 2027, which means no more security fixes after that date.
- What it is: the final security update for Windows Server 2016 will be the January 2027 release.
- Who is affected: any business still running Windows Server 2016 for file sharing, Active Directory, line-of-business software or remote access.
- The risk: unsupported servers become an easy target because newly discovered flaws are never patched. Insurers and compliance frameworks may also object.
- What to do: Microsoft advises planning an upgrade to Windows Server 2025, which is supported until 2034. A free 180-day trial is available from the Microsoft Evaluation Center for testing.
With under three months to go, we recommend businesses identify any 2016 servers now and book migration work before the end-of-year rush. Source: BleepingComputer.
