Microsoft Windows: Windows 11 Update Crashing Some Apps and Games

Microsoft has confirmed that a recent Windows 11 update can cause some programs to crash when they play audio. A fix is promised but no date has been given.

  • What it is: After installing update KB5124010 (released 22 September 2026), applications that rely on Windows’ built-in AC-3 (Dolby Digital) audio decoder can close unexpectedly or fail to start, often when volume or audio settings are changed.
  • Who is affected: Computers running Windows 11 versions 24H2, 25H2 and 26H2. Microsoft says most modern applications should not be affected, but older programs and some games are more likely to be.
  • The risk: Lost work and interruptions rather than a security threat. Business software that plays audio alerts or video could be affected.
  • What to do: Until a fix is released, avoid audio playback in affected programs or switch off any audio features recently enabled. Microsoft has not yet published a release date for the fix.
