Google is changing what happens to secondary calendars when their owner leaves. From 5 October 2026, they will be deleted or suspended along with the owner’s account.
- What it is: Secondary calendars (for example shared team, room or project calendars) will now follow the lifecycle of the account that owns them, matching how primary calendars already behave.
- Who is affected: All Google Workspace customers. Calendars owned by non-personal Workspace accounts are the main concern for businesses.
- The risk: When a staff member leaves and their account is deleted or suspended, any shared calendar they own could disappear for everyone else.
- What to do: Transfer ownership of important shared calendars to a current staff member or a shared account before offboarding anyone. Administrators can do this in the Admin console or via the Calendar API, and users can do it in Calendar settings.
The change is rolling out gradually over several weeks. We recommend adding a calendar ownership check to your staff departure process, and we are happy to help review your shared calendars. Source: Google Workspace Updates.
