Google is rolling out a long-requested Gmail feature: delegated mailboxes can now be accessed from the Gmail app on phones and tablets, not just from a web browser on a computer.
- What it is: Staff who have been granted delegate access to another mailbox (for example a shared inbox like info@ or accounts@, or a manager's mailbox) can now read, manage, and send email from that mailbox in the Gmail mobile app.
- Who benefits: Executive assistants, reception and accounts staff, and anyone covering a shared mailbox while away from their desk.
- Rollout timing: Android is completing around 8 July 2026, with iOS following by 29 July 2026. The feature appears automatically once the rollout reaches your account.
- Admin action: None required. Existing delegation settings carry over, and delegates are managed the same way as before in Gmail settings or the Admin console.
This removes one of the main reasons staff resorted to sharing mailbox passwords on mobile, which is a practice we recommend against. If your business uses shared Gmail mailboxes and you would like delegation set up properly, contact us. Full details are on the Google Workspace Updates blog.
