Two significant updates landed in Google Workspace this week that business administrators should be aware of – one improves security over mobile device management, and the other gives organisations more control over where AI data is stored and processed.

• Granular mobile device management (MDM) controls – now generally available: Admins can now delegate mobile device management privileges at the organisational unit (OU) level rather than granting organisation-wide access. This means, for example, a department manager can be given device management rights over their team's devices without being able to access or manage the whole company. This reduces the risk of overly broad admin access. Available to all Google Workspace customers.
• Gemini app data regions – now enforced: Organisations using Google Workspace's Gemini AI features can now specify whether their data is processed and stored in the EU, the US, or both. This is important for businesses with data sovereignty, legal, or compliance requirements. Admins configure this in the Admin console at the organisational unit level. Available for Enterprise Plus, Education Plus, Education Standard, and Frontline Plus editions.
