From 30 June 2026, all Australian telecommunications providers will be required to publish registers of resolved network outages on their websites. This is a significant change for business customers who have historically had to rely on social media, call centres, or news reports to learn about outage history.
- What it is: New mandatory outage transparency rules from the Australian Communications and Media Authority (ACMA) require all licensed telecommunications providers — including Telstra, Optus, TPG, Vodafone, iiNet, and others — to maintain publicly accessible registers of resolved outages dating back to 31 March 2026.
- Who is affected: All Australian businesses using any telecommunications service. The obligation falls on providers, not customers — you do not need to do anything for the register to appear.
- What it means for your business: For the first time you will be able to visit your carrier's website and check a documented history of past outages in your area or service type. This is directly useful for SLA reviews, insurance claims related to connectivity losses, and evaluating carrier reliability before renegotiating contracts.
- What to do: From 30 June, check your carrier's website for the outage register section. If you are currently reviewing your telco arrangements or approaching a contract renewal, request outage history data as part of that process — carriers will now be obliged to provide it.
This change comes on the back of a string of significant outages affecting Australian businesses, including the Vodafone/TPG hub failure on 18 June 2026 which disrupted services for over 5.7 million customers. Greater transparency is a step in the right direction. If you would like help benchmarking your current carrier's reliability or reviewing your connectivity options, contact us.
