From 30 June 2026 — five days away — all Australian telecommunications providers are required to publish public registers of resolved network outages, under new rules made by the Australian Communications and Media Authority (ACMA).
The rules mean that telcos including Telstra, Optus, TPG/Vodafone, and NBN Co must publish key details about every major and significant local outage that occurred on or after 31 March 2026. Each outage register must include:
- A plain-English description of the outage with a unique identifier
- The type of outage and which networks were affected
- The duration and geographic scope of the incident
- Whether the outage affected Triple Zero emergency services
The change follows several high-profile Australian telco outages in recent years, including the Vodafone Australia network hub failure on 18 June 2026 that knocked out services for 5.7 million customers across Vodafone, TPG, iiNet, and Lebara.
For businesses, these public registers will make it significantly easier to confirm whether a connectivity issue is a carrier outage, support service credit claims, and assess the reliability of your current provider. We recommend bookmarking your carrier's outage register once it goes live next week.
