Office 365: Exchange EWS Blocking and Office 2021 Cut-off

Microsoft is making two changes this month that could quietly break tools your business relies on. One has already started, and the other lands on 13 October.

  • Exchange Web Services (EWS) blocking: From 1 October, Microsoft began blocking EWS in Exchange Online. Older backup tools, email archiving products, CRM add-ins and other legacy integrations that use EWS may stop working or stop syncing mail.
  • Office 2021 end of support: On 13 October, all Office 2021 products stop receiving security patches and updates. Unsupported office software is a common way for attackers to get in.
  • Windows 10 and Server 2022: Microsoft 365 apps on these systems stop receiving new features at version 2608 and get security updates only until October 2028.
  • Teams changes: The Teams live chat widget for websites closes on 5 October, and Teams calendar sync with Google Workspace is due to end this month.

We recommend confirming that your backup and email-connected tools still work, removing any Teams chat widget from your website, and planning a move from Office 2021 to Microsoft 365 Apps. OzComm can check all of this for you. Source: Office Watch.
