Google has begun rolling out a new way for Workspace admins to stop sensitive files in Drive being shared with the wrong people.
- What it is: A single unified rule that combines sharing permissions (who can access a file) with data sensitivity (how confidential it is), replacing two separate settings admins had to manage before.
- Who is affected: Any organisation using Google Workspace with an admin managing Drive sharing settings.
- What the risk is: Without this, sensitive files can be shared outside the organisation more easily than intended, raising the risk of accidental data leaks.
- What action is needed: No action is required immediately. The feature is rolling out gradually from 14 September 2026 over a 15-day window.
Once it lands in your admin console, we recommend reviewing your Drive sharing rules to take advantage of the tighter, content-aware controls.
