Google Workspace: New Controls to Reduce Insider Risk

Google has given Workspace administrators a simpler way to spot risky internal file sharing before it becomes a data leak.

  • What it is: Admins can now set up a single rule that combines audience sharing settings with sensitivity-based data conditions, rather than managing them separately.
  • Who is affected: Any business on a Google Workspace plan with an admin console, particularly those handling sensitive client or financial data.
  • What the risk is: Without these rules, sensitive files can be shared more broadly than intended, whether by mistake or by a disgruntled staff member, and go unnoticed.
  • What action is needed: Review your Workspace admin console's data protection rules and consider setting up combined sharing and sensitivity conditions for your most sensitive document types.

This is a useful control to tighten if you handle client data and have not reviewed your sharing rules in a while. Source: Google Workspace Updates.
