Microsoft has paused a recent Windows 11 security update after it caused some Dell computers to shut down unexpectedly, overheat, or drain their battery faster than normal.
- What happened: The July update (KB5101650) clashed with an Intel driver on certain Dell models, so Microsoft blocked the update from installing on affected devices.
- Who is affected: Businesses running Dell PCs with Intel processors on Windows 11 version 24H2 or 25H2. Affected machines may show a warning in Device Manager next to the "Intel Innovation Platform Framework Processor Participant" driver.
- The risk: Beyond the inconvenience, unexpected shutdowns can interrupt work and, in rare cases, contribute to data loss if files were not saved.
- What to do: Microsoft has released a follow-up fix (KB5121767 for standard devices, KB5121768 for hotpatch-enrolled Enterprise devices). We recommend applying it as soon as it appears in Windows Update, particularly across Dell fleets.
