Telstra: National Mobile Outage Affected Triple Zero Calls

Telstra experienced a nationwide mobile network outage on Wednesday 8 July, caused by a software fault rather than a cyberattack. Some customers were briefly unable to reach Triple Zero.

  • What happened: A botched firmware update caused some Telstra timing servers to incorrectly reset their clocks by nearly 20 years, which caused parts of the network to reject valid phone connections.
  • Who was affected: Telstra mobile customers nationwide experienced dropped calls and data issues. Some Triple Zero calls also failed to connect, with callers redirected to another network instead.
  • Current status: Telstra says the main network issue was fully resolved by 4pm Wednesday. The Triple Zero calling fault was reduced by around 90 percent overnight, with work continuing to eliminate it entirely.
  • What to do: If your business relies on mobile connectivity for EFTPOS, alarm monitoring, or after-hours contact, keep a backup contact method, such as a landline or second carrier, on hand until Telstra confirms the issue is fully resolved.

We will continue to monitor the situation and post again if anything changes.
