Google has updated Google Vault — the compliance and archiving tool built into Google Workspace — to now support retention rules and litigation holds for content generated by the Gemini AI app. This update is relevant for any business with legal or regulatory obligations around data retention.

• What it is: Google Vault can now apply retention policies and legal holds to Gemini app conversations and outputs, covering the same ground it already covers for Gmail, Drive, Chat, and other Workspace services.
• Who is affected: Google Workspace customers using Google Vault for compliance, eDiscovery, or legal hold purposes — particularly those in regulated industries such as finance, legal, healthcare, and professional services.
• What this means: If your staff use the Gemini AI assistant within Google Workspace, those interactions can now be captured under your existing data retention policies. Depending on your industry obligations, this may be a requirement rather than an option.
• What to do: Review your Google Vault retention rules and confirm whether Gemini app data should be included under existing or new policies. If you are subject to industry regulations, consider whether AI-generated content in Workspace now falls within your retention obligations.
